Draw your own conclusion about 9/11( Participation)

What really happened in 9/11? What is the official version of it? What are some of the reasons  for which we should question the official narrative?

Let us know why some academicians and scholars pose serious doubt on the official narrative of 9/11. Besides thinkers and scholars like Howard Zinn and Noam chomsky, some academicians and architects  and engineers are also questioning the popular understanding of 9/11 reinforced by mainstream media.

  1. I believe that even though there may be unanswered questions about 9/11 that the government told us what the general public needs to know at the present time. Especially because the event of 9/11 is still a tender subject to be talked about. I think that with any historic event there is always controversy and conspiracies that people can come up with. I think many people are just trying to find any reason to make president George Bush’s decision of going to war unreasonable or unacceptable. People are attempting to make the war in Iraq and Afghanistan unjustifiable by producing all of these conspiracy theories. I stand by what the government’s report was and that the war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan. I think that the conspiracy theorists need to see that Al-Qaeda attacked our country and support the quick response of action by our government and not question everything.

    1. I agree with Andrew. No one will ever know what was going through the minds of the terrorists the day of 9/11. President bush was put in a horrific situation and had to do what he thought was best for our country. Our country was forever changed the moment the first plane went down.

  2. I personally don’t have any answer to what really happened in 9/11, and I don’t know if we ever will. I agree with Howard Zinn’s point that it will never be clear on what really happened and that no one will be able to prove anything. However, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t talk about 9/11 because it’s crucial in answering the more important questions about how our administrations and our foreign policy would make people in the world want to blow up our buildings and terrorize our people. I think understanding how and why we got to the point of 9/11 is way more beneficial to our society and our future, than concentrating on searching for evidence to point fingers at who was responsible. I agree with Howard Zinn in his point that inquiry on conspiracy would divert the real inquiry and lead us away form what we really should be inquiring about. As a country built on progressive ideals, focusing on who did it rather than why America became a target would be taking steps backwards not forwards and by focusing on why rather than who would help us understand how to prevent it from happening again, which is the goal.

  3. September 11th was the day that four attacks were made on the New York, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania area. It is said that an Islamic terrorist group, al-Qaeda, was responsible. Thousands were killed and billions of dollars of property was ruined. There are conspiracies about what actually happened and if our government could have done something to stop it. Many conspiracy theorists, I’m sure, are trying to become known by making up random lies and telling the world that other things happened. In the first video, it talked about how the buildings would not have burned down the way they did just by the fuel from the planes but instead, there were bombs placed throughout the towers that were set off when hit. It bothers me to think that so many people waste their time trying to figure out what really happened when nobody will ever know.

  4. It will never be clear on what really happened on 9/11 according to Zinn. Yes, I believe there will never be a right answer about this day. Due to conspiracy theories it makes everyone question everything. Who to believe? Well, I believe what I saw on the screen. A group of 19 men hijacked 4 planes to cause one of worst attacks our nation. I also believe Osama Bin Laden played a major role in the attacks.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWVC4JBjtEE This link is a video of Osama talking about the attacks. Its obvious who did it. So why do we question everything that seems to be right? People do not trust our goverment and its terrible to think we just planned it on ourselves.

    1. I agree that it is an outrageous idea or conspiracy to believe that the government planned it knowing very well it would have been responsible for the death of thousands. Osama bin Laden clearly stated in a video he was responsible for these terrorist attacks. I believe all the conspiracy videos make it difficult to understand what really happened on 9/11.

  5. I believe we, the public, will never truly know what happened behind 9/11. 9/11 is a sensitive subject, even 13 years later, making it difficult to talk about. Many testimonies are not reliable that were in the book published from the government. Although architectures strongly argue that the buildings couldn’t have collapsed the way they did, the videos clear display it otherwise. I believe many of the conspiracy videos make it tougher for people to understand what happened because they want you to believe their view and only their view. 9/11 was an excuse, used by the Bush administration to go to war. Zinn wants the American public to ask why would they want to attack us. He believes is that many countries are unhappy with our foreign policy. But I don’t understand why they would want to attack us and kill civilians because of a foreign policy they’re unhappy with.

    1. I agree, it is a hard subject to talk about, especially when it has to do with our government stabbing the backs of thousands of people who were innocent. There are so many personal opinions about the attack and it is hard to cipher through.

  6. My conclusion… i’m not sure i have one. That was the first time in my life i realized, even America could be touched. It was hard to see all the people jumping to their deaths and the towers crumbling on the people. Watching fire fighters, police officers, and civilians working together to help people escape. Time felt like it froze, everyone was staring at the screen and tears were rolling down strangers faces that were not even there. It’s depressing how one unbearable action can effect people that are thousands of miles away. I respect the men and women of the military who put their lives on the line and went to Iraq. Even now, with so much going on with the middle east, i still support the troops because they are protecting our freedom. As far as the “Conspiracy” i’m not completely sold on it but, i feel that the answers that i want will only bring pain and betrayal to the united states. 9/11 will always have an impact on my life.

  7. Personally I don’t have a conclusion on the 9/11 attack, the attack that changed history because I don’t know much on this topic. Since watching the first video I was unaware that there was a third building that collapsed hours after the twin towers fell. Even after watching all of the videos I am still not able to make a conclusion on what happened and who is responsible. All the conspiracies makes it hard to trust and easy to doubt the government. For example, many architects with 20 plus years of experience believe the building could not have collapsed due to fire. But I can agree with Zinn that even if there was a conspiracy, it does not lead anywhere. We must shine away on who did this and focus why the attack happened.

We are a super power, we cant be touched or harmed but then here this comes and were like oh no why did this happen? But then cover it up to a certain extent so we don’t release our true anger? Our government is messed up period.

  8. The 9/11 Attack was a message to us to say that we cannot let our guard down but at the same time it shows how sneaky our government can be to covering it up. It made us stronger perhaps and made us have more security in our airports but where is the long term aspect of it. Okay we killed Osama Bin Ladin and got American revenge i guess but it doesn’t hide the fact that our government couldn’t do without the fact that they were going to cover it u. Are we not allowed to know the real story? All the conspiracies about our government makes it hard to trust our own government. After watching the videos i cant make an conclusion on who did it and who responsible. We can only go for what our government has brought to us. But I do agree with Zinn that even if there was a real conspiracy, it does not lead anywhere to conclusive evidence in who did it.

  9. I personally believe in what our government has told us in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. I believe in the verdict that an Islamic terrorist group called al-Qaeda was responsible for the group of 19 men who hijacked 4 planes and attacked the USA. I also believe that they were lead by a extremist leader named Osama Bin Laden. Though I also agree with Howard Zinn’s statement that we may never and probably won’t ever know for 100% fact what happened, I have faith in my government not to lie about who was behind the attack. On top of faith, I can’t seem to think of any social/economic benefit that our government could get from covering up or even worse, planning, the attack on 9/11.

Question: What is one social, political or economic benefit, if any, that our government could have gotten from covering up or planning the 9/11 attack?

I do not believe anyone will fully understand what happened that day, but I think everyone understands that it changed our country forever. Lives were lost that day, and I believe what the government has told us about that day. No matter what decision Bush made about going to war, things would never be the same. 11. Sept. 11th, 2001 – The Official statement was that 4 planes went silent and flew off course. 2/4 planes crashed into World Trade Center Twin Towers. About an hour later, the buildings collapsed and killed nearly 3,000 people. A third tower was destroyed along with the Twin Towers: World Trade Center 7. Many engineers, architects, and scientists confirm that the tower was brought down in the same method as a “controlled detonation. Evidence (rubble, debris, etc.) from the sites were not properly analyzed by professionals and were disposed of by unknown affiliations.

The official statement declared there was no evidence of explosions at Ground Zero, yet many eye-witnesses described explosions from the buildings prior to them collapsing. Bone fragments and body parts were found in the months following the attack on top of buildings that had been neighboring the Twin Towers.

Society should question the official statement because it’s the duty of the public to question the government (our country was built on this principle!). It’s also the responsibility of the American people to involve themselves in questioning global motives and events, especially when terrorism is brought to the home-front.

One of the quotes that really hit home with me from the top video was,

“After WWII, part of the way that Jewish people honored the dead was by making sure that the truth was known and that the value of these people was respected. Not pursuing the truth about 9/11 disrespects the value of the life of the people that died. Thinking that we’re above such things, that it could happen in other countries, but it couldn’t happen here, that’s a lack of humility; and that’s excessive pride. And so not being able to see our dark side or our weakness is the most dangerous thing…So we need to understand that questioning is patriotic. Questioning is what we’re supposed to do as citizens, it’s our duty.”

I also agree with Howard Zinn that we should be questioning, “In what way has American foreign policy enflamed and antagonized people all over the world to the point of creating terrorists?” and that everything blocking the truth is a “diversion” purposely created by the government utilizing mass media to successfully implement the Direct Effect Theory Critical Analysis to cloud the minds of the American people in the midst of their emotional crisis.

Without an equally as dramatic reveal of what truly happened behind 9/11, I believe the American public will never know (or choose to continue denying) who the true affiliates are in the attack on our home-front.

    Here they are:

If the Counterarguments (“conspiracies”) are “true,” then why would our Government forsake an entire culture for personal gain (stereotyping Middle-Easterners as “terrorists”)? Is the fact that we’re able to openly question our Government proving they are loyal to their public, or instead proving they are comfortable passive-aggressively manipulating the masses

  13. Being completely honest, I was almost shocked as I scrolled down the slide to see the previous comments. I found that American people are way more “patriotic” and confident about their homeland than what we had been gathered from movies & books & news in China. (Which is sth really really surprising to me, but I’d rather not to judge it).

As for me, a Chinese who grew up in a “socialist country”, and “under centralization from the Chinese Communist Party”, there’s actually no such thing as “conspiracy theory”—everything is, in a way, “darksome”, for the so-called common people. In other words, we don’t trust our government; “everything they do, they’re always sacrificing the interests of people”. It’s so sad and so striking to realize and find evidence that how little our patriotic education had really influence on ourselves, that such a failure our patriotic education had been (gradually changing for sure; but nothing changes overnight).

“Being an ordinary people, do no big good, no big evil, knowing this world is complicated and has many dark secrets, but only consider them as an inevitable, concrete part of real life and make them with ourselves altogether as a joke”, that’s what the “Chinese common people’s philosophy” for a Chinese. What happens if “the truth” really reveals? Suppose American government was a part of it, the scholars were right; what then? Will they find comfort by successfully proving their government’s immoral political acts? Should the government be completely thrown out by the raging people if they didn’t do anything while they could? More essentially, would those who died in 911 back to their families again? While the scholars saying that they’re doing investigations because “the families deserve the truth”; what kind of truth should it be? That eventually finding out the deaths of their beloveds’ were somehow related to their own government? I would rather be ambiguous of this tragic event. I would rather question less about “who did it” and more about “how to prevent it from happening again”; further, not just in any particular country, but in all over the world. The same as what could we do over all the prejudice over endless issues that could easily set fire to bleeding homeland and heart-broken families.

I understand why should we “re-visit” 911 in this case; I especially took some notes about why people don’t accept this “conspiracy theory”, that is the pre-conception is working so perfectly, it’s so hard not to force oneself to change his/her own idea when it rooted so deep in one’s mind. It’s the automatic self-denial system in everyone. Taken Ethnic Study, I’m sure aware of these can be really helpful for us to understand why sometimes it’s so difficult for majority to change their stereotype opinions. But if asked what do I think about 911, well, it’s over 3,000 broken families. Right now I hold no political opinion, I am no Chinese, just a human being who also have a family.

  14. Speaking for myself and as I have read, many others, I do not know what really happened on 9/11 and the reasons for it. What happened with the twin towers and the pentagon was terrible, and I do not think that our government did something so terrible that made al qaeda commit such a crime and cause so many deaths. I do not disagree with the governents decisions to go to war and have justice for what was done to us. I believe that if the government did actually do something without us knowing, then the story would have been out by now. 9/11 is such a recognized date for america that if there were a different story about it, the story would already be out.

  15. I think what also makes it really hard to come to any significant conclusion about what happened on 9/11 is that this event was/is extremely emotional for the entire country, and questioning whether or not the thousands of lives lost were due to vain reasons in our own government is a lot to fathom and probably something we’d rather not have to believe. Alexander touched on this when he said he has faith our government would not lie to us. We don’t want to believe in the conspiracies because our emotions are tied to our Patriotism or (lack there of), so we want to have faith that what we know about 9/11 is actually what happened. Sometimes though, basing what we know only on emotions and faith limits us from finding out the full truth.

  16. We will never know what truly happened on September 11, 2001. I do not think that United States knew about this or that it was “fixed”. However, the US made irrational choices because their anger was out of hand. The taste of revenge was too much to bear because of how horrific the attacks were. The US did what they thought was best at the time and that was war. We are trying to jump to conclusions about an event that is indeed still quite recent. Maybe we will find out the “truth” when the years go on, when September 11 is put in history books and our children ask us about that day. Honestly, the people who know why and how this happened are no longer with us because their life was taken away on that horrible day.

  17. Even after watching the videos, I still do not have a conclusion to what really happened during 9/11. Agreeing with Zinn, of course the public should know, but then again there are so many different perspectives and theories that really no one can really be positive of what happened. There are going to be people that are skeptic of how the fuel burned and how the planes crashed, but as stated before, we cannot determine the definite cause of the crash. I believe that we can only depend on the confession of Al Qaeda. I know that this is not a strong statement to base an entire attack that resulted in 3 fallen buildings and a number of citizens killed, but the again I do not believe our own country’s leaders would allow their own citizens to build anger and hatred towards this group. Not only has this incident cause tension between Al Qaeda and America, but has created a sort of racism towards muslims for being from that same region. Thus, I don’t believe in any of these conspiracy theories because I believe America is a much better place than a country run by deceiving leaders. All we can hope is that we can remember the day and the lives that were lost on this horrendous day.

I definitely agree with Isaiah because it is so true that America has become a stronger country due to its advances and tightening of security at airports and military bases following the incident. During 9/11, I lived on the largest military base in Virginia, where it was discovered that an Al Qaeda member visited the shipyard, taking photographs of the ships and the entire a base. Thankfully, my base was not a target during 9/11, but we were unaware of an enemy on our own military bases. Following 9/11, we know have gate guards that require 100% ID checks to proceed. I am so grateful that we now have a more secure country where we can feel like we are safe.

I personally think that the United States did not know anything prior to the attack on 9/11 2001 and because they didn’t have a reason too, many conspiracy theorists can argue and say that they have evidence and why the government is to blame, but its not true because our own government wouldn’t kill almost 3,000 American Lives for nothing, I agree with Zinn that we should be asking the Government questions.

It just seems fishy how secure they are with all the evidence and how secretive they make it towards us, the public. 9/11 may or may not have been planned but I feel like the US would of showed us every single detail and made a great effort to counter act all the theories that have been brought up if it truly wasn’t planned.

  24. Throughout the video the architects keep referring to what brought the Twin Towers down as a “controlled demolition” and that there had to of been bombs in the towers to bring them each down in less than 12 seconds because the fire created by the jet fuel could not have reached a hot enough temperature to melt the steel structure.

With research I had discovered that the Boeing 767 is capable of carrying up to 23,980 gallons of fuel and it is estimated that, at the time of impact, each aircraft had approximately 10,000 gallons of unused fuel on board. If one assumes that approximately 3,000 gallons of fuel were consumed in the initial fireballs, then the remainder either escaped the impact floors in the manners described above or was consumed by the fire on the impact floors. If half flowed away, then 3,500 gallons remained on the impact floors to be consumed in the fires that followed.

“There has been one misrepresentation that has come from that. Many sites refer to the difference in the melting point of steel and the burning temperature of jet fuel as proof that the World Trade Center could not have fallen from the aircraft fires. What those authors fail to note is that while steel melts at around 1,370°C (2500°F) it begins to lose its strength at a much lower temperature. The steel structure of the World Trade Center would not have to melt in order for the buildings to lose their structural integrity. Steel can be soft at 538°C (1,000°F) well below the burning temperature of jet fuel.”

In conclusion, I don’t believe there was any type of “controlled demolition”, but that the steel structures collapsed due to an airplane flying through each Towers 1 and 2 releasing thousands of gallons of jet fuel igniting a fire that reached a temperature hot enough to weaken the steel structures causing them to collapse at a fast rate.

    1. I agree 100% and i love that you did some outside research to get all the details. Also extraordinary and horrifyingly unlucky things happen all the time when it comes to structures and the environment. Also once things inside the building caught fire it would only increase the temperature as the jet fuel continued to burn, it would add to it and create an ember type heat, and the fire would have an endless amount of oxygen pumping in it could only grow and increase heat causing the steel to heat and fail even faster. I agree and think that these “architects” haven’t thought every of every possibility and have tunnel vision on the idea that our government is out to get us.

  27. I think it’s important to focus on the “comparative ethnics” part of this. It’s easy to comment about how we agree/disagree with the idea of 9/11 being a conspiracy and if it was set up by the government. But of course, that’s not why we’re commenting.
Many people find it suspicious how quickly the Patriot Act was passed and put into effect. Though I understand the focus of it, to help prevent terrorist attacks by invading citizens’ privacy.. I also see it as a sure-fire way that allows racial profiling to take place.
I was on Twitter I believe and I saw a post that was very popular; there was a middle-eastern man (I can’t be sure about his heritage) wearing a turban, and he took a selfie while in line for airport security, and he was behind a couple of prominently white people. He captioned the picture “About to get randomly selected – LOL.”
While it’s enjoyable to poke fun at this picture, it’s a little sad. You’ll find that a lot of people have noticed that this “random” selection process for checking people out at airports (and all around, in workplaces, etc.) isn’t really random at all. Though I myself have seen people of all ethnicities getting pulled out of line, I have never seen someone who “looks” middle-eastern NOT get pulled out. It’s hard to think about how an act put into place for protection is still taking away privacy rights of those who’s physical appearance happens to make them look “like a terrorist.”

As I sat there and watched the videos I am also unclear of what happens. There are such little evidence to fully understand the why’s and how’s of the situation. My friends solely belive in conspiracy and it just happened because of the government. I also like to agree with that in a way because of the shows that i watch. The show Prison Break is a show about how a group of people staged someones death and put it on an innocent person. It is hard not belive that something like that can happen because of the powers that the government has.

Itʻs interesting hearing the documentary about 9/11 and the controversies and conspiracy theories behind it. Some of them are obviously possible but I agree with a lot of other peopleʻs posts about how no one will ever know. I do think it is good to talk about it because it makes people aware that not everything is black and white and they are other possibilities of what happened. Iʻm not sure if our government could have stopped it from happening, I mean who can predict that sort of thing? But because of what happened we are all better prepared.

  32. honestly i think the government is trying to hide the truth, my Major in JROTC back in high school told me that Hitler in world war two , during the start of the war he dressed his soldiers in polish uniforms and had his own troops attack a German outpost to say that the polish initiated the war. this was used as a way to justify Hitlers reasons for the invasion of Poland. to bring this back to modern times, whether that is true or not the fact that we can not trust our government raises the question did we initiate 911 ourselves? and we wont know. the government is has its own agenda and staging things we do not know. the reason why the government needed 911 to happen is because it needed to unite the country and create a common enemy that the American people would unite against, and that is exactly what happened. there was a huge recall of soldiers to fight the ‘Taliban’ for the U.S. but if we think about it, are soldiers really fighting for the United States? or the U.N? my point is there is definitely something bigger going on here, and it is important that people are aware that this country is going down the drain.

  33. I am unable to provide my own insight on what definitely happened on 9/11, because I am not certain. I think it is difficult to decide what the definite answer is because we aren’t fully convinced by either side. I do however, strongly believe that the government hid evidence and treated the event in the way that they did, because there is something to hide. The official report for 9/11 was that a terrorist group is to blame for the collapse of the buildings. However the evidence and standpoints provided by the numerous professionals prove that this was planned out and not caused by a simple plane crash. Another reason why I think it is easy to believe that this wasn’t a terrorist attack is the fact that the U.S. government could use this to exploit the Middle East and use them for their natural resources, such as oil. In the past the U.S. exploited other populations for the sake of progress, it is justifiable to believe that 9/11 may have been a similar scenario where the government wanted to disparage those pertaining to the same ethnic group as Al-Qaeda in order to gain power. I think it is important to except that we may never know any further evidence or details about this horrific event. We need to learn that although it may seem like our government wants the best for America, they may go to extremes to “better” our country, so it is acceptable to question the governments actions.

  34. Tatyana I agree that people need to be aware that not everything is black or white, like we’ve been learning, there are many recorded events in history that were told incorrectly and have led us to not know the truth about certain events. I think it’s important that we realize not everything we are told is the truth.
Ryan, I also think that if the government wouldn’t have acted the way the did with lack of evidence and unanswered questions, we may have a clearer vision of what may have actually happened.
Alexander and Scott, it seems like the government is untouchable group of individuals that would do no harm, because they are in power. But there is a lot that the government does that we don’t know about. Its important to remember that just because they have all this power, they can still use it for bad, and I think that’s why its important to question our government like Abraham Lincoln stated.
